Therapies & Modalities

Chiropractor Sanford NC Rachel Myers Chiropractic For Knee Pain

Below you will find a list of therapies and modalities utilized in our treatment plans.  Some of these may not be covered by your insurance.  Please see our insurance staff if you have any questions.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy uses “specific wavelengths of light (red and near-infrared) to create therapeutic effects.  These effects include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling.”  “During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen and nutrients to the damaged area.  This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness and pain.” (*From K-Laser Brochure, available upon request)

Muscle Stimulation

Interferential current therapy is a treatment to aid the relief of pain and the promotion of soft-tissue healing. Small electrical impulses are used over the tissues in the area of the pain. Where these waves intersect below the surface of the skin, the low-frequency stimulation causes the body to secrete endorphins, which are the body's natural pain-killers. Most patients find interferential therapy to be very beneficial and describe the treatment as being relaxing and having a 'pins and needles' sensation. Ligament sprains, muscle strains and spasms often respond well to interferential current therapy.

Intersegmental Traction

The goal of intersegmental traction is to create passive range of motion of the spine to stretch the spinal joints and increase mobility.  This mobility helps provide nutrients to the joints through the improved circulation of spinal fluids along with improved joint lubrication.  The rollers under the surface of the bed create this passive movement of the spine which patients find restful and relaxing.

Decompression Technique

Whether you have lower back pain, a pinched nerve, sciatica, neck pain, or a variety of symptoms related to damaged or degenerative discs, as well as syndromes of the lumbar and cervical spine, decompression therapy may be for you. This gentle, non-surgical therapy can provide lower back pain relief, sciatica pain relief, and is a state-of-the-art therapy for neck pain relief, bulging or degenerative disc disease, and lumbar pain. The gentle distractive forces of the decompression therapy create a decompression of the spine with unloading due to distraction and proper positioning, to improve blood flow and nutrient exchange to the injured area. You'll experience several cycles of stretch and relaxation, which graduates to a peak over a period of several minutes.*

Pronex / Posture Pump Cervical Traction

The cervical traction provided by the Posture Pump and the Neck Deck is intended to help restore the natural curvature of the neck.  By helping restore your neck’s normal curvature, you should notice improved posture, improved spinal structure and the relief of neck and headache pain.  Both of these devices perform very similar functions.  The doctor will help decide which will reduce your symptoms best and meet your level of comfort.

Saunders Cervical Traction

Cervical traction has been applied widely for pain relief of neck muscle spasm or nerve root compression.  It is a technique in which a pneumatic force is applied to the neck to reduce muscle spasms by stretching soft tissues and separating facet joint surfaces or bony structures. Traction helps to reduce the pressure on the nerves of the neck due to disc injuries and provides the disc with the fluids and nutrients it needs for healing.

G5 Massage

Our G5 Massager provides a powerful deep or percussion massage to the prescribed area.  This massage works to increase circulation and the flow of endorphins to help reduce pain and improve tissue nutrition with oxygen-rich blood.  It also works to decrease muscle spasms and edema creating improved range of motion.

Active Therapeutic Movement

The goal when using the ATM2 is to perform active therapeutic movements (ATM’s) to reduce or eliminate movement related pain.  The ATM2 uses multiple belts to help reposition the body to eliminate pain with a particular movement.  Exercises are then performed in that movement pattern which helps improve the sequence of muscle firing to reduce pain.

Therapeutic Exercises

We utilize therapeutic exercise to improve muscular strength, endurance, balance and flexibility.  Each patient in need of therapeutic exercise receives an individualized program based on their needs to meet the goals of their treatment plan.  Exercise programs will be progressed based on each patient’s tolerance and will provide patients with exercises they can continue at home.

Cox Lumbar Traction Technique

During a treatment on this table, the patient lies on their stomach while the doctor concentrates on one vertebral motion segment at a time. The goal is to reduce pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerves by dropping the pressure within the disc, thus allowing disc reduction, increasing the space between the vertebrae where the spinal nerve exits the spine, and lowering pressure on the exiting nerve. While concentrating on the low back, the doctor may use the instrument's lower section to allow lateral and circular motion which returns normal motion to the spine with reduced pain.

Any of these therapies may be used during the course of your treatment plan.  Your doctor will determine what you need based on your individual plan of care. If you have any question about these therapies please ask your doctor or any staff member.
